A prayer for good weather is a short request for clear skies, safe travel and a peaceful day, usually spoken in the days before an important event like a wedding, a funeral, a harvest or a long trip. Every major religious tradition has some form of it. Below you will find six original prayers we wrote for couples and families, including a prayer to stop rain, a Christian prayer for good weather for a wedding, a non-denominational blessing and a secular intention for anyone who does not pray, along with the saints traditionally asked for fair weather.

Feel free to copy, print or adapt any of them. They are written to be honest: they ask for sunshine and also for the grace to enjoy the day if the sky has other plans.

Is It Okay to Pray About the Weather?

People have prayed about weather for as long as there have been crops and journeys. The Hebrew Bible describes Elijah praying for rain to end a drought. Jewish liturgy includes seasonal petitions for rain and dew. Islam has a dedicated congregational prayer for rain in times of drought, Salat al-Istisqa, and a well-known supplication for when the rain becomes too much. Catholic and Orthodox Christians have long-standing prayers for fair weather and for protection from storms.

Most traditions also hold an important balance: you may ask for what you hope for, and then you trust. That is why many of the prayers below end by asking for peace whatever happens. For weddings in particular, that second half is often the real gift.

Prayer for Good Weather for a Wedding (Christian)

Gracious God, maker of the sun and the rain, you know every cloud and every breeze. On the day we make our promises, we ask you for clear skies and gentle air, safe roads for those who travel to us, and warmth for every guest. If it is your will, hold back the rain. And if the rain still comes, let it fall as a blessing and let our joy be greater than the weather. We ask this with grateful hearts, in Jesus' name. Amen.

Prayer to Stop Rain

Lord of sky and sea, the rain is your gift and the sun is your gift. Today we ask for the gift of a pause. Gather these clouds and carry them where they are needed, to dry fields and thirsty rivers, and give us a few clear hours here. Calm our worry while we wait, and teach us to laugh if we get wet. Amen.

Non-Denominational Blessing for Good Weather

To the spirit of the sky and all that moves within it: we come with open hands and hopeful hearts. May the clouds be kind, the wind be soft, and the sun find its way to us. May everyone who gathers arrive safely and leave happy. Whatever weather comes, may it carry blessing, and may we meet it together.

This one works well read aloud at a rehearsal dinner, or written on a card and tucked into a bouquet.

A Short Morning-of Prayer

God of this new morning, thank you for bringing us to this day. Bless the sky above us and the ground beneath us. Give us sunshine if you can, and peace no matter what. Amen.

A Prayer for the Worrier

If you are the one checking the forecast every hour, this one is for you. (We have a whole guide to wedding weather anxiety if the worry is getting heavy.)

I hand this worry over. I have done what I can: the plans are made, the backup is ready. The sky was never mine to hold. Give me rest tonight, a clear head tomorrow, and eyes to see the beauty of the day, rain or shine. Amen.

A Secular Intention for Good Weather

Not religious? You can still mark the moment. An intention is a clear statement of what you hope for and how you choose to respond.

We hope for a clear sky and a soft breeze on our day. We have planned well and we have a backup. We choose to be present, whatever the weather does. We will remember the people, not the forecast.

Say it together the night before, write it in your wedding journal or read it while lighting a candle (more on that kind of practice in our good weather ritual guide).

Saints Traditionally Asked for Good Weather

Catholic and folk Catholic traditions turn to several saints for weather. None is an "official" patron of sunshine, but these are the names you will hear most:

Saint Feast day Weather connection
St. Clare of Assisi August 11 Her name suggests "clear." Couples in Spain and the Philippines bring eggs to Poor Clare nuns and ask for fair wedding weather.
St. Médard June 8 France's weather saint; the proverb says rain on his day means forty more days of rain.
St. Scholastica February 10 In the classic story, she prayed and a storm came, keeping her brother St. Benedict with her for one more evening of conversation. She is invoked about storms and rain.
St. Barbara December 4 Traditionally asked for protection from lightning and thunderstorms.
St. Swithin July 15 England's weather legend: rain on his day means forty days of rain.

A note on a common mistake: burying a St. Joseph statue is a custom for selling a house, not for weather. Our guide to weather superstitions for weddings covers the St. Clare egg tradition and others in more detail.

A simple prayer to St. Clare

St. Clare, whose name means light, pray for us as we prepare for our wedding. Ask God for clear skies and calm hearts, and help us carry your brightness into our marriage. Amen.

Prayers About Weather in Other Traditions

We are not going to write prayers on behalf of traditions that are not ours to speak for, but here are a few real practices worth knowing:

  • Islam: According to the hadith collections, when rain grew excessive the Prophet Muhammad prayed, "Allahumma hawalayna wa la 'alayna", "O Allah, around us and not upon us." Many Muslims still use it. See the Wikipedia overview of Salat al-Istisqa for the drought prayer.
  • Judaism: The daily Amidah includes seasonal phrases praising God who causes the wind to blow and the rain to fall, and asking for dew or rain in their season. Ask your rabbi about appropriate words for an event.
  • Folk rhymes: Children in England have sung "Rain, rain, go away" since at least the 1600s, and in Brazil they chant to St. Clare and St. Dominic to chase the rain. More in how to stop rain.

If you are marrying across faiths, a short shared intention (like the secular one above) can sit comfortably next to each family's own prayers.

Pairing Prayer With a Plan

Prayer and preparation go together. A few practical steps:

  1. Check the real odds. Our free wedding rain odds tool uses decades of historical weather to show your chance of rain for the exact date and place.
  2. Set a decision deadline for moving indoors or putting up the tent, usually two or three days before.
  3. Assign a weather person so you are not the one refreshing the forecast.
  4. Let someone else hold the intention, if you like. Our personal wedding weather ritual is performed for your date and location before the day, with photo proof and a written blessing. It does not replace your prayers or your tent. It is one more way of saying "we hope."

The Bottom Line

A prayer for good weather can be as simple as "please, and thank you." Use one of the six originals above, pray to St. Clare if your tradition welcomes the saints, or speak a secular intention together. Ask for sunshine, ask for peace whatever happens, and then let go: the plans are made, the backup is ready, and the day is still yours.

Frequently asked questions

Who is the patron saint of good weather?

There is no single official patron, but several saints are traditionally asked. St. Clare is the favorite for clear skies, thanks to the link between her name and the word clear. St. Médard is France's weather saint, St. Scholastica is invoked about storms and rain, and St. Barbara is asked for protection from lightning.

What is a good prayer to stop rain?

A simple prayer to stop rain names what you need and what you will accept. For example: Lord of sky and sea, if it is your will, hold back the rain for these few hours, and if the rain still comes, help us greet it with grace. Short, honest prayers are part of nearly every faith tradition.

Is it okay to pray for good weather for a wedding?

Yes. Christians, Jews, Muslims and many other believers have prayed about weather for millennia, from asking for rain in drought to asking for clear skies at harvest. Many people pair the request with a prayer for peace, so that the day is joyful whatever the forecast does.

Is there an Islamic prayer for when rain is too heavy?

Yes. According to the hadith collections, when rain became excessive the Prophet Muhammad prayed, O Allah, around us and not upon us. Muslims still use this short supplication today, and Islam also has a special congregational prayer, Salat al-Istisqa, for asking rain in times of drought.

When should I pray for good weather before my wedding?

Any time that feels right. Many couples pray during the final week, once the forecast starts to matter, and again on the morning of the wedding. Some families make it a shared moment at the rehearsal dinner, and others simply add a line to their regular evening prayers.
